Anders Nilsson made 41 saves, but it was not enough. ANdy Greene's penalty shot goal in overtime lifted the New Jersey Devils to a 2-1 win over Buffalo on Friday night at First Niagara Center.

The news is not as good for Dmirty Kulikov. For more on that, and who will take the defenseman's spot in the lineup, click here for Paul Hamilton's pregame primer. Also, feel free to comment in the thread below and give Brian Koziol and myself each a follow on Twitter: @BrianWGR and @PatWGR.

First Period

15:34 - A good start once again tonight by the blue and gold was partly triggered by the Foligno-Larsson-Gionta line. Those three have consistently pressed the opposition with a solid forecheck and tonight is no different. It has not resulted in a goal yet, but at least the action is fast paced and has lead to scoring chances.

11:23 - Anders Nilsson has not had a quiet night in her crease so far. The pace of play has been very good at both ends, and each netminder has had to be on his toes. The Devils gameplan appears simply be throw everything at the net and hope it either makes it or ricocchet's off of the boards to the front of the net. Shots are 10-8 in favor of Buffalo.

9:26 - SABRES GOAL. Some hard work and hustle on the power play pays off for the home team. Sam Reinhart was able to chip the puck away from two defenders and to the front of the net. Matt Moulson was cutting right through the slot and left no doubt with his snapshot past Keith Kincaid. 1-0 BUF

4:59 - Tonight's game is the antithesis of the start here two nights ago, it is amazing what two rested teams can do on the ice. Both teams are flying up and down the ice, putting the puck on net and making the game entertaining. I hope this keeps up through the rest of the game, because there won't be a fan in the building that would be cheated with effort like this.

NJD: none

Penalty Summary

BUF: none
NJD: 9:52 - Nick Lappin (2 min., tripping)

Shots on Goal

BUF - 13, NJD - 13

Second Period

15:57 - This has been a much cleaner defensive game to start in the middle stanza. Each team has one shot on goal, but there is at least room for the teams to maneuver. Even though defense is keeping the game to the outside the two teams are looking to lanes they can get the puck through.

12:27 - Buffalo goes to the penalty kill for the first time tonight as Nick Baptiste sits for holding. New Jersey has been using their speed this period, led by Taylor Hall. We have talked about it plenty tonight, but it can be repeated: acquiring the former #1 overall pick for Adam Larsson is such a steal for New Jersey.

9:38 - Shots this period are 8-3 in favor of the Devils, this has been their period. They forced Baptiste into the penalty with their offensive play this period and Nilsson has had to be at the top of his crease many times to challenge the opponent. The first period was mainly tilted in Buffalo's favor, and that has been reversed here in the second.

4:47 - Not a good spot for Buffalo as Rasmus Ristolainen joins Josh Gorges in the penalty box. Gorges initially went for holding, while Ristolainen shot the puck over the glass in his own end trying to ice the puck. The 5-on-3 is for 1:25 or less.

2:51 - You could not have asked for a better oenalty kill than what Buffalo just did. On the 5-on-3 Derek Grant, Ryan O'Reilly, and Jake McCabe did a nice job of keeping the puck to the outside and blocking any shots ticketed for Nilsson. The goalie had to steer the puck away from the front a few times, but he was not as busy as he could have been.

BUF: 7:33 - Nick Baptiste (2 mon., holding). 14:38 - Josh Gorges (2 min., holding). 15:13 - Rasmus Ristolainen (2 min., delay of game)
19:52 - Jake McCabe (2 min., high sticking)
NJD: 18:22 - Damon Severson (2 min., slashing)

Shots on Goal

BUF - 8 (21), NJD - 11 (24)

Third Period

18:08 - Buffalo with a big penalty kill to start the third period after Jake McCabe was called for high sticking with just seconds left in the second period. New Jersey collected four shots on goal, but Nilsson was not challenged much. Buffalo's goaltender has turned away all 30 Devils' shots so far in this game.

16:47 - DEVILS GOAL. A face-off win in the Buffalo zone results in the game-tying goal for New Jersey after simply just dumping the puck down low and getting a deflection in front of the net. Anders Nilsson stopped the inital shot but Yohann Auvitu's shot from the point went off the goalie's glove hand and into the net. There was traffic that caused Nilsson to misplay the puck. 1-1 tie.

6:36 - New Jersey has been dominant this period, carrying over the momentum they had last period and now have a four minute power play to work with after Evander Kane took a high sticking double minor. This could be the point where NJ takes the lead, and for good.

1:00 - Shots this frame are 18-5 New Jersey, they have bee that dominant. But it only takes one shot at this point of the night.

End of Regulation

Goal Summary

Penalty Summary

BUF: 12:17 - Evander Kane (4 min., high sticking)

Shots on Goal

BUF - 5 (26), NJD - 18 (42)

Overtime

4:31 - DEVILS GOAL. Andy Greene was awarded a penalty shot as Evander Kane grabbed at him and spun him like a top on a near breakaway. He slid the puck through Anders Nilsson's legs and ended the game quickly. 2-1 NJD.
