From the Locker Room: Sabres-Capitals

Evander Kane, Kyle Okposo, Chad Johnson and Phil Housley address the media after the 3-2 loss to Washington on Monday

February 19, 2018 - 6:18 pm

The Buffalo Sabres played host to the Metropolitan Division powerhouse Washington Capitals in an afternoon matchup on Presidents' Day on Monday.

Buffalo home struggles continued to drag on as a two-goal second period by Washington was enough to stave off a late, third period Sabre attack. The Capitals snuck by the blue and gold on Monday by a final score of 3-2.

Go inside the locker room to hear from Evander Kane, Kyle Okposo, Chad Johnson and Phil Housley following the loss.

Evander Kane:

Spotty effort again: "We were there [at times] today but we couldn't get those two points. We have to use the momentum from the third period and bring that with us into next game."

Mentality: "I just kind of played a little pissed off today, I guess. Little earlier start on a Monday morning and I brought that with me."

Kyle Okposo:

Period by period: "Story of the game. We came out ready to play; not a really eventful first period. We got away from our gameplan in the second, and then too little, too late with our effort in the third."

On his goal: "I was just trying to battle to get to the net. Evan [Rodrigues] made a great play, and it hit me on the way in [off Scott Wilson's shot]."

Momentum and drive: "There's good teams that are going to come with momentum into these games. We're not there yet. We have to find our way to get to that point soon."

Chad Johnson:

Early confidence: "I felt good. I thought we controlled where the shots were coming from [early]. I thought we controlled their speed too, for the most part. I knew I was going to have to be strong against an opponent like Washington."

On the third period: "If you look at it, you could say that we made a push. They also sat back a bit too. That's common with team who enter final periods with leads. Nonetheless, it's great to see, but [we] don't want to make a habit of having to come back on a consistent basis."

Phil Housley:

Kept the Caps at bay: "[Washington tallied] A couple of lucky goals, but good teams find ways to get those goals in even tough times."

On the overall gameplan: "We played some simple hockey. Chipping pucks behind them, doing work against the boards... for the most part I liked our game. As you saw the second period ultimately ended up being the difference in the game, but we had a strong push in the third period and I liked that too. End result is just unfortunate."

On Evander Kane's play: "I thought he was very physical today. Played with an attitude. Threw his body around, and even got that goal at the end there. I liked his game a lot."
