Bengals bash Allen and the Bills, 26-13

Josh Allen was sacked five times in a rough half for the Bills offense

August 26, 2018 - 5:00 pm

Josh Allen's first start as a Buffalo Bill did not go as, maybe, he had hoped.

The Bills' offense under Allen got bashed and battered throughout the first half by the Cincinnati Bengals, and got shut out before Nathan Peterman's arrival in the second half. By that time, Andy Dalton and the Bengals offense had done their damage, putting up 20 points on the scoreboard, en route to a 26-13 win over the Bills at New Era Field.

The spotlight was on the rookie quarterback as he got the start on Sunday after two strong appearances this preseason against the Carolina Panthers and the Cleveland Browns. The 22-year-old had gone 18-of-32 through the two games played, tossing two touchdowns along the way and making some impressive plays to help the team move the football down the field and put up points on the scoreboard.

However, Allen was under duress in the eight series of work he got in and was sacked a total of five times. Overall, Allen went 6-of-12 in the loss for just 34 yards before exiting the game late in the second quarter after hitting his head on the turf. Allen went under evaluation for a head injury after another play, but he was cleared and did not play another down.

Peterman entered the game and played well once again, going 16-of-21 for 200 yards and a 17-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jason Croom in the third quarter. In three preseason games, Peterman has completed 80.5-percent of his passes for 431 yards, and an interception as he continues to fight for the starting job in Buffalo.

As for the Bills defense, they struggled to stop the Bengals in the air after struggling to stop the Browns on the ground the week before. After the fans of Buffalo welcomed Dalton with a warm reception for helping the Bills clinch a playoff berth last season, the veteran quarterback threw all over the secondary, completing 11-of-16 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. One of those touchdowns came on the first play on offense as Dalton hit John Ross for a 57-yard touchdown

Overall, the Bengals torched the Bills for 367 yards through the air, but only managed to gain 68 of their total yards on the ground.

The Bills will wrap up the preseason on Thursday when they travel to Chicago to face the Bears at Soldier Field. Kickoff in Chicago is scheduled for 8 p.m.
