Bengals hand Bills second loss of the season, 20-16

The Bills now head into their bye week sitting at 3-2 in the standings

October 08, 2017 - 11:24 am

Following back-to-back impressive wins over the Denver Broncos and the Atlanta Falcons, the Buffalo Bills came up short against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday from Paul Brown Stadium. The Bills defense forced three turnovers from the Bengals offense, but Buffalo's offense could not make a play when they needed to in a 20-16 loss.

Buffalo had the chance to go 4-1 into the bye week with a win, and sit alone atop the AFC East. Instead, they fall to 3-2 in the standings and sit in a three-way tie with the New England Patriots and New York Jets.

The Bills defense stopped the Bengals on their first drive of the game, but it didn't take much longer to get A.J. Green involved. Green ran past Tre'Davious White, and Andy Dalton hit him in stride for a 77-yard touchdown.

On offense, the Bills got off to a slow start. Tyrod Taylor was sacked twice on each of the Bills first two drives, forcing punts. On their third drive, the Bills got some push forward. Charles Clay made a 24-yard catch, but went down on the sidelines with an injury.

Clay left the game, and was carted to the locker room. He's out for the game.

The Bills finally got the break they'd been waiting for. On their own 25-yard line, Andy Dalton overthrew A.J. Green, the ball was tipped up into the air by Green, and Micah Hyde made a diving interception. That's a league-leading four interceptions on the year for Hyde.

The Bills took full advantage on their next drive. On a 3rd down in the red zone, Tyrod Taylor escaped pressure and rifled a pass to LeSean McCoy for the first. He followed that up with a perfect touch pass to Brandon Tate for a touchdown on 3rd and goal from the 12.

The Bengals were unable to get anything going on the following drive. Shaq Lawson made a great stop on Giovani Bernard on a 3rd and 2 to get the ball back with 2 minutes to go in the half. Tyrod and the Bills offense got to the Bengals 41-yard line, but couldn't get any further, and the drive ended in a 10-10 tie.

The Bills offense couldn't do anything on their first drive, but the Bills defense once again forced a turnover. A Dalton pass was tipped again by A.J. Green and was intercepted this time by Jordan Poyer. This time, the Bills were unable to capitalize.

Again, the Bengals offense was able to move the ball, but coughed up another turnover. Lorenzo Alexander crushed A.J. Green, who coughed up the ball, and Jordan Poyer recovered the loose change. The Bills were able to get down to the 22-yard line, and Hauschka gave the Bills the 13-10 lead.

The Bills defense had prevented big plays all year, they couldn't stop A.J. Green today. For the second time, Green got loose for a big gain. This time it was a 47-yard catch-and-run down to the Bills 5-yard line. Bengals running back Joe Mixon punched it in for seven points on the next play to give the Bengals the lead once more.

After a stop by the Bills defense, Brandon Tate came up with a huge punt return into the Bengals' red zone. However, the Bills offense couldn't get into the endzone, and had to settle for another field goal from Hauschka. During the drive, Zay Jones caught a fade pass in the end zone but was out of bounds. LeSean McCoy was then stopped by Vontaze Burfict for a loss of four.

The Bengals took a lot of time off the clock on their next drive. They killed over five minutes off he clock, and drove down for a Randy Bullock field goal to push their lead to 4.

With 3:33 left on the clock, the Bills offense went to work trying to get a go-ahead touchdown. After Taylor takes a sack on 1st down and McCoy gains nothing on a second down pass, Taylor was forced to go to the air on third down to get 15-yards. However, he misses high to Zay Jones and into the arms of Bengals safety George Iloka with 2:14 left on the clock.

With no timeouts left for the Bills, all the Bengals needed was a first down on their next drive. They got it from Mixon with 1:53 left to play, and all that was left for Cincinnati was to kneel out the clock.
