Bills fall to the Jets 34-21 on Thursday Night Football

The loss in the Meadowlands drops the Bills to 5-3 on the season

November 02, 2017 - 8:23 pm

Despite losing by just 13 on Thursday Night Football, the Buffalo Bills were dominated in their 34-21 loss to the New York Jets at Metlife Stadium in New Jersey. The Bills' loss drops them to 1-3 on the road this season, and 1-1 in the division (both against the Jets).

The Jets defense came ready to play, dominating the Buffalo offensive line and sacking Tyrod Taylor seven times. New York also forced three fumbles in the win, putting a dent in Buffalo's positive turnover differential.

As for the Bills defense, they struggled to wrap up the Jets offense, and gave up 194-yards on the ground to the Jets' run game.

The big move of the week was the Bills acquiring wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin from the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday. Benjamin was not able to get any practices in with the team, so he will have to wait to make his Bills debut until next Sunday. Here were the Bills full inactives.

Neither offense got anything going on their first two drives. The Jets, led by big plays by Matt Forte, and Robby Anderson pushed the ball down field. On 3rd and 5 from the Buffalo 10, McCown scrabbled out of the pocket, and into the end zone for six. The Bills secondary all had their eyes on receivers, and McCown was able to walk in for the touchdown.

The Bills offense did next to nothing in the 1st quarter. Their first drive went backwards and almost resulted in a safety. Their second saw two first downs, thanks to great individual efforts by Tyrod Taylor and LeSean McCoy. The Bills crossed mid-field, but were forced to punt.

The Bills did get the ball going, on Zay Jones' best drive of the season. Jones made a big catch over the middle, and scored the touchdown to cap off the drive. Tyrod Taylor sat in the pocket, and got to Jones, his second read, over the middle for the score. Taylor looked efficient for the entire first half.

Right after, the Jets answered with a nine-play, 52-yard drive to set up a field goal. McCown did throw a touchdown to tight end Austin Sefarian-Jenkins, but it was called back for offensive pass interference.

On the next drive, Zay Jones made a nice 11-yard catch. A few plays later, Jones ran a great route that beat the Jets corner. However, the Jet stuck his knee out, and Jones tripped. While tripping Jones planted his knee, which looked to hyperextend. He left the game with help from trainers. Jones returned at the start of the second half.

The Bills were moving the ball in their final drive of the half. On a 3rd and 7 just past mid-field, Jordan Matthews reached for the 1st down, but lost the ball. It was the Bills' second lost fumble of the season.

In the second half, the Jets got their second touchdown, on their first drive of the half. Cedric Thornton took a crucial facemask penalty on a sack to set the Jets up in scoring postion. McCown made the Bills pay with a 25-yard strike to Robby Anderson for six. The Jets held their first two score lead of the game.

Again, nothing from the Bills offense. Backed up inside their own 10, LeSean McCoy could get no where on his rushing attempts. Tyrod Taylor continued to have pressure thrown in his face, and failed to get anything complete downfield at all. The Bills started the seconnd half with three straight three and outs.

The Jets took advantage of the Bills offense's woes again. Bilal Powell broke loose for a 54-yard run, and Matt Forte followed that on the next play with a 10-yard touchdown. All Jets in the third quarter.

Turnovers had been the Bills strength all year. Following a great pass and catch from Taylor to Nick O'Leary, O'Leary wasn't touched, but didn't realize it. When he did realize, he fought for extra yards, and fumbled the football.

Tyrod Taylor got hammered while trying to make something happend with his feet halfway through the fourth. Taylor fumbled, and the Jets recovered and returned it inside the 10. Matt Forte scored on the next play.

Taylor and the Bills offense padded their stats on the next drive. Taylor threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Deonte Thompson.

After the Bills recovered an onside kick, they compiled more garbage time points with a one-yard quarterback sneak from Taylor.

The Bills tried to recover another onside kick, but the Jets recovered and ran down the clock to seal the 34-21 win.

Up next for the Bills is a matchup with the red-hot New Orleans Saints at New Era Field on November 12. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. with coverage along the Buffalo Bills Radio Network beginning at 7 a.m.
