Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550) - You will never question where Sean McDermott’s focus is. When he was asked about using last season as a motivator, he said that was for the offseason and now all he can focus on is the Baltimore Ravens.

If the Bills are going to have any success on offense this year, LeSean McCoy will have to have a big season. McDermott said, “In respect with LeSean, he’s developing, I’ve watched him since he was younger, I appreciate his leadership, he’s playing fast. He looks like he’s in better shape than a year ago.

How has the running back accomplished that? McDermott said he’s seen the work and seen him grow, “His approach day-to-day to his craft. He comes in early in the morning and wants to learn, wants ot have a firm grasp of the defense he’s going to face and his effort during the game.”

There is nothing new is the case with McCoy and his ex-girlfriend. McDermott talks about a culture and he knows distractions will always come up in a season, “We as a team talk about general distractions that can come up during a year and there’s always things that come up within a season, but it’s important that we stay focused on what we need to stay focused on and the team stays together.”

On Tuesday, McCoy being named captain raised some eyebrows. McDermott said it didn’t surprise him at all, “That was voted on by his teammates and I think that says a lot about their respect for him as a teammate and I’m proud of him for that.”

For the second time in three years, the Bills must start the season in Baltimore. They lost two years ago and McDermott thinks this time will also be a tough task, “The Ravens are a physical football team and coach Harbaugh preaches that. We have a lot of respect for what they do and how they do it and we work hard at fitting the run.

“We also have to be ready for Lamar Jackson when he comes on the field, so there’s different elements to their run game.”

Let’s get back to that culture word. Some people believe in it and some don’t. McDermott created a culture that helped a team overachieve last season. Now the question is, how does he continue that and keep it fresh? “You’re always trying to bring a team together, that’s one of the bigger challenges that a head coach has is to find ways that are within the time constraints that are upon us to bring a team together that comes from different demographical backgrounds and that’s one of the things that we spend a lot of time thinking about and I spend a lot of time with our leaders working on it.”

McDermott said Kyle Williams and Trent Murphy will be out at practice “as tolerated.”

Ray-Ray McCloud did not practice and Julian Stanford was limited.
