Bills sputter to 2-5 on the year; lose to the Colts 37-5

Buffalo was outscored 24-0 in the second quarter, while LeSean McCoy left the game early with a head injury

October 21, 2018 - 1:48 pm

Another week, another poor offensive performance for the Buffalo Bills.

The Bills fall to 2-5 on the 2018 season after a 37-5 drubbing at the hands of the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

While the offense had another poor day, the Bills defense was also ripped apart, especially in a disastrous second quarter that blew the doors wide open.

The Colts' offensive attack was led by quarterback Andrew Luck, who wound up 17-of-23 for 156 yards and four touchdowns. Running back Marlon Mack became the first player to run for over 100 yards against the Bills this season, with 126 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. T.Y. Hilton also had four catches for 25 yards and two touchdowns against the Bills' defense.

The Bills' offense was, once again, careless with the football, with five turnovers on the day. Four of them came from new Bills quarterback Derek Anderson, who finished the contest 20-of-31 in the air for 175 yards, three interceptions and one fumble lost.

Adding to the terrible loss, LeSean McCoy wound up leaving the game with a head injury after just their second play on offense and did not return. Head coach Sean McDermott said following the loss that McCoy is in the concussion protocol.

The Bills wound up falling apart with two turnovers and the usually stout defense gave up three touchdowns to Luck in the second quarter alone.

The Colts first struck with a long 13-play drive that ended with a pass from Luck to tight end Erik Swoope, then Luck and the Colts piled on a second touchdown after a fumble from Bills tight end Charles Clay. Marlon Mack took a swing pass and finished off the drive to convert on the turnover. Luck then found T.Y. Hilton on their next drive to make it 21-0 on a nine play drive.

Anderson attempted to get the Bills to within striking distance on a two-minute drill, but had a pass picked off by Colts safety Mike Mitchell and returned deep into Bills territory. The Colts then converted on the field goal to end the half up 24-0.

Buffalo added a field goal after the Bills' first drive after halftime and a Colts high snap resulted in a safety, cutting the lead to 24-5.

The Bills couldn't muster anymore points after that, and more turnovers caused the blowout to get uglier. Following a fumble by Anderson, Luck threw for his fourth touchdown and his second to Hilton for a 31-5 lead. Marlon Mack capped off the scoring for the day after a touchdown run one play after Anderson's second interception of the day.

Anderson added a third interception in the final minutes, allowing the Colts to just kneel out the game.

The Bills will return home and welcome the New England Patriots to town for a matchup on Monday Night Football at New Era Field. Kickoff is set for 8:25 p.m. and can be heard on WGR with John Murphy, Mark Kelso and Sal Capaccio on the call
