Bills victorious in preseason finale over the Lions

Nathan Peterman impresses in his two drives while the run game puts up 205 yards

August 31, 2017 - 3:18 pm

For the first time since the 2007 season, the Buffalo Bills beat the Detroit Lions in their annual meeting in the last preseason game.

The Bills ended their long drought against the Lions on Thursday night with a 27-17 win at New Era Field.

Buffalo has remained relatively healthy with no serious injuries to their top players. However, quarterbacks Tyrod Taylor and T.J. Yates highlight the injury list as both sit in concussion protocol, leaving rookie quarterback Nathan Peterman as the quarterback working with the first-team unit this week.

Because of the shortage at quarterback heading into the fourth preseason game, the Bills officially signed Keith Wenning to a contract to back up Peterman. The 26-year old joins the Bills after separate stints with the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals and New York Giants. He was an original draft pick of the Ravens in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Thursday was a night where many of the Bills' depth players were looking to make a name for themselves before Saturday's league-wide roster cuts. The Bills' roster currently sits at 83 players, and will need to be trimmed down to 53-players by Saturday at 4 p.m.

A number of the Bills' starters did not play on Thursday, including LeSean McCoy, Eric Wood, Richie Incognito, Charles Clay, Jerry Hughes, Shaq Lawson, and many more. Cordy Glenn, John Miller, and Jonathan Williams were among the notables who did play.

The Bills and Peterman take the first drive of the game into Lions territory and are able to gain entry into the redzone. Peterman combined with both Brandon Reilly and Philly Brown through the air, while Jonathan Williams had a nice few carries to move the chains four times on the drive. The Bills settled for a 30-yard field goal from Stephen Hauschka after Peterman missed on a third down throw to Nick O'Leary.

The Bills defense came out strong on the Lions' first offensive drive forcing a three-and-out. E.J. Gaines made a nice play on third down, getting a hand in the way of Jake Rudock's pass attempt for Noel Thomas.

Peterman and the Bills offense went back to work on the next drive, taking the ball down the field once again. Peterman was clicking once again on the drive, connecting with Brandon Reilly on a third down play and Joe Banyard on a quick pass.

The drive was capped off with a 21-yard touchdown run by Williams, who broke free and tip-toed his way down the sidelines and into the endzone. Hauschka's extra-point attempt was successful.

On the first play of the second quarter, Lions receiver Jared Abbrederis made a reception for 16 yards but was stripped of the football by safety Trae Elston. After the ball rolled around for a short time, Joe Powell came up with the football at the bottom of the pile.

The next drive, it was Keith Wenning time as he came in to signal the end of the night for Peterman. After a costly personal foul penalty on third down stop for the Lions, the Bills' drive continued. After a fourth down conversion at the Lions' 25-yard line, the Bills failed to advance any further and had to settle for a Hauschka 45-yard field goal.

The Lions finally got on the scoreboard with 1:55 left to go in the first half after Matt Prater puts up three points with a 53-yard field goal.

The clock ended up running out on the Bills' final drive of the half, and the Bills went to the locker room with the 13-3 lead.

Detroit received the ball to open the second half, but their drive was stopped after Ian Seau sacked Brad Kaaya on third down.

Joe Banyard got the Bills into Lions' territory on the second play of the next drive with a big 40-yard run to the Detroit 33. Banyard ended up carrying the ball five times on the drive, and eventually put up seven more points for the Bills on a one-yard run.

Looking for a response, Kaaya and the Lions offense drove down the field and got as far as the Bills' 9-yard line. But on a second and goal play, Kaaya is picked off in the endzone by cornerback Greg Mabin to force the touchback. It was Mabin's second interception of the preseason.

The Bills offense kept on rolling with a couple of good runs from Jordan Johnson and Taiwan Jones to get into the Lions' redzone. From there, UB Bulls product Jordan Johnson punched his way into the endzone for his first touchdown of the preseason. With Hauschka's extra-point, the Bills extended their lead to 27-3 over the Lions.

The Lions finally found themselves in the endzone thanks to a 74-yard catch and run by Tion Green. Prater's extra-point cut Buffalo's lead to 17 with just 7:41 to play.

After a quick three-and-out for the Bills offense, the Lions drove back down the field looking to cut the deficit even more. At the end of the drive with 3:38 left in the game, Kaaya connects with Dontez Ford from six-yards out to get the Lions within 10.

The Bills punted again at the two-minute warning to give the Lions another shot at putting some points on the board. However, Ian Seau came up with a big play to sack Kaaya, strip him of the ball, and recover his own fumble to seal the deal.

Buffalo finishes the preseason 1-3, and will now look ahead to the Week 1 opener against the New York Jets at New Era Field.
