(WGR 550) - Team Canada was 0.4-seconds from being eliminated at the World Championship, but somehow escaped Switzerland to advance to the semi-finals. In another quarterfinal game on Thursday, Team USA was knocked out of the tournament by Russia 4-3.

Since both games started at the same time, I didn’t get to see much of the Canada win, but I did see the final two goals live. Trailing 2-1, the Canadians pulled their goalie and Damon Severson’s N.J. shot from the point got through goaltender Leonardo Genoni and dribbled over the line with just 0.4-seconds left.

In overtime, Pierre-Luc Dubois Clm. found a streaking Mark Stone Veg. down the slot and his goal gave Canada its 3-2 win. Stone also scored Canada’s first goal.

The Sabres’ Sam Reinhart did not have a point in this game and played 17:46 with two shots on goal.

Now for the game I did see, Team USA gave the No. 1 seed Russia all it could handle, but lost 4-3.

Russia scored the game's first two goals and the U.S. couldn’t recover. Nikita Gusev Veg. made it 1-0 after Cory Schneider N.J. dropped the puck in the crease and Mikhail Sergachev’s T.B. power play point shot deflected off Jack Eichel and past Schneider.

For Team USA, Brady Skjei N.Y.R. made it 2-1, Noah Hanifin Calg. made it 3-2 and Alex DeBrincat Chi. with Schneider pulled made it 4-3, but Team USA could never pull even.

Jack Hughes was a healthy scratch against Canada, but he rebounded with a nice game picking up two assists in this one. Captain Pat Kane Chi. also had two assists.

Schneider finished with 39 saves while Andrei Vasilevskiy T.B. stopped 29 pucks for Russia.

Dylan Larkin Det. was hurt in the game against Canada and Team USA missed his speed in this one.

Eichel had points in the first six games of the tournament, but he didn’t hit the scoresheet in the final two contests. Eichel played 20:34 against Russia and had five shots. He finishes the World Championship with two goals and six assists for eight points in eight games.

Kane ended up as Team USA’s leading scorer with two goals and 10 assists for 12 points in eight games. DeBrincat had seven goals in eight games.

Russia is now a perfect 8-0-0 in the tournament.
