Chad Kelly bumped up to No. 2 quarterback in Denver

The nephew of Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly becomes the new backup for the Broncos

Denver Broncos quarterback Chad Kelly, nephew of Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, has been promoted to the second string signal caller on the depth chart.

Kelly entered training camp as the third quarterback on the roster behind 2016 first round selection Paxton Lynch. Kelly will now serve as the primary backup to free agent signee Case Keenum.

Kelly has had an up-and-down camp, but has taken advantage of the failures of Lynch, especially in their game against the Minnesota Vikings. Kelly went 14-of-21 for 177 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in Denver's first preseason game, while Lynch was a paltry 6-of-11 for only 24 yards and threw one interception.

Kelly was taken by the Broncos with the final pick (253rd overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft. Kelly's draft stock took a hit due to injuries and concerns over off-field issues. In two years as a starter with Mississippi, Kelly threw for 6,800 yards, 50 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.
