Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be leaving NASCAR

The racer will retire at the end of this season

(WGR 550) - Another popular NASCAR driver is getting set to leave the sport for good.

Hendrick Motor Sports announced on Tuesday morning that Dale Earnhardt Jr. will retire at the end of the 2017 NASCAR season.

Earnhardt missed half of the 2016 season with a severe concussion. He has raced eight times this year with his best finish being fifth place.

The 42-year-old Earnhardt has won 26 races since he started in 1999. He won two Daytona 500 races in 2004 and 2014.
