The Calgary Flames scored once at the end of regulation, and again in overtime to defeat the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 on Tuesday night at KeyBank Center.

Nathan Beaulieu was whistled for the first penalty of the game. The defenseman was called for tripping just over six minutes into the game, giving Calgary the first power play of the night. The blue and gold were able to kill off the minor penalty, thanks in part to Carter Hutton. The goaltender made a big save early in the penalty kill to keep the game 0-0. The Flames went back to the man advantage a few minutes later when Conor Sheary was penalized for slashing, but again, Buffalo was able to kill it off.

Jack Eichel broke the scoreless tie late in the first period after the Sabres created a turnover in the neutral zone. Jason Pominville used a crisscrossing pattern with Jeff Skinner to get the puck to Eichel, who unleashed a wrist shot into the top corner of the net. Pominville received the lone assist on the score.

Matthew Tkachuk was called for a minor late in the opening frame, but the Sabres failed to score on their chance.

Sheary was called for a hooking penalty late in the second period, and the Sabres killed it off once again. With just under a minute to go in the middle stanza, Eichel was whistled for an elbowing minor.

Buffalo recorded 11 shots on goal in the second period, for a total of 22 through two periods. Hutton stopped all 27 Calgary shots on goal through forty minutes to preserve Buffalo's 1-0 lead.

Zach Bogosian was penalized for charging just over seven minutes into the third period to give the Flames their fifth power play of the night.

Calgary finally got on the scoresheet with a goal under a minute remaining in regulation. Tkachuk was able to re-direct a shot from the point into the net and make the score 1-1. Elias Lindholm and Sean Monahan assisted on the Flames' first goal of the night, coming on their 36th shot of the game. He was then called for a penalty just as the third period ended, giving Buffalo a 4-on-3 advantage in overtime.

Buffalo could not take advantage of their OT power play chance. After the teams went to 3-on-3 after the power play, Calgary used a stretch pass out of their own end to create what would turn into the game-winning goal. Johnny Gaudreau scored his sixth goal of the year to give the visitors a 2-1 win in the extra frame. Mark Giordano took part in the give-and-go play, and assisted along with Monahan on the winner.
