Hurricanes prevail over Sabres 6-5 in OT

Jeff Skinner's second goal ties it late, but Teuvo Teravainen nets the winner

February 07, 2019 - 7:12 pm

Jeff Skinner scored twice, including the tying goal in the final minute of regulation, but Teuvo Teravainen's second goal of the evening proved to be the game-winner in overtime, giving the Carolina Hurricanes a 6-5 win over the Buffalo Sabres. With the victory, the Hurricanes move past Buffalo in the standings with 60 points, compared to 59 for the Sabres.

Justin Faulk kicked things off for the Hurricanes just 4:04 into the game with his seventh goal of the season. Faulk crept in from the point, took a pass in the slot from Sebastian Aho and beat Linus Ullmark for the 1-0 Carolina head. Teravainen made it 2-0 in the opening minutes of the second, pushing in a loose puck only seconds after Ullmark made a great save to keep it out. The goal sparked an ensuing flurry of activity in the Buffalo end, with Carolina maintaining possession and buzzing around Ullmark.

The Sabres finally got a break in the form of a power play. Although they didn't score while Warren Foegele was in the penalty box, the team found the net only seconds later. Evan Rodrigues stayed hot with his sixth goal in eight games to pull the Sabres to within a goal. Rodrigues swooped in, dropped to one knee and buried a rebound chance.

Later in the second period, Jason Pominville chipped his own rebound out of the air and over Curtis McElhinney's glove, tying the score 2-2. Rodrigues was in the area again, camped to McElhinney's left and close enough to make some contact -- but not enough to confirm Carolina's challenge of goaltender interference.

The Hurricanes started the third period on the power play, but much like Buffalo's second period chance, the Hurricanes scored not long after the man advantage expired. Greg McKegg was left alone and tapped in a shot that went off the post. Buffalo's top goalscorer came through moments later when Jeff Skinner bullied his way to the net, out-muscling Faulk and whipping the puck past McElhinney. With the game knotted 3-3, Carolina again went ahead on Brock McGinn's fifth of the season.

Nearly four minutes later, Nino Niederreiter made it 5-3 in favor of the Hurricanes with a power play goal, but Marco Scandella got the Sabres back to within a goal less than one minute with his fourth of the season. Sam Reinhart fed the Buffalo defenseman, who found the net through traffic along the near wall. With less than a minute left in regulation, Skinner's second of the evening tied the game once again, this time 5-5, sending the two teams to overtime.

With 1:35 remaining in overtime, Teravainen ended it with a breakaway goal that he was able to tuck past the right leg of Linus Ullmark. After Jack Eichel missed the net on a hard shot, the puck bounced around the glass and on the stick of Teravainen, who beat an exhausted Rasmus Dahlin on his way to the net.
