BATAVIA, NY (WGR 550) - Jim Kelly is receiving the Jimmy V Award at this year’s ESPYs.

The former Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback revealed the news to reporters at Terry Hills Golf Course Monday morning. Kelly spoke to reporters just after his 32nd annual Celebrity Golf Classic teed off.

The Jimmy V award is given annually to a member of the sports world who has overcome great obstacles through perseverance and determination. It is named in honor of former North Carolina State men's basketball coach Jim Valvano, who gave an acceptance speech after receiving the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 1993 ESPYs, then passed away from a form of cancer two months later.

Kelly will be the second former Buffalo Bills player to receiver the Jimmy V award for perseverance and determination. Former tight end Kevin Everett, who was paralyzed from the neck down in a game in 2007, received it in 2008.

Even after recent reconstructive jaw surgery, Kelly spoke to the players, sponsors, fellow celebrities, and media on hand prior to the golf tournament teeing off. He then promptly stepped up to the first tee and without any warm-up shots and a crowd of cameras around him, drilled a drive right down the middle of the fairway.
