Kerber defeats Serena Williams in Wimbledon final

Germany's Angelique Kerber denies Serena Williams from her 24th Grand Slam title

July 15, 2018 - 9:17 am

It was a great comeback run for 25th-ranked Serena Williams in her first Wimbledon tournament since giving birth to her daughter more than 10 months ago. However, she came up just short as 11th-ranked Angelique Kerber captured her third career Grand Slam tennis title at the All England Tennis Club in London, England.

Williams was looking to capture her record-tying 24th Grand Slam championship and eighth Wimbledon title, but she was denied by the 30-year-old Kerber, who defeated her in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Margaret Court currently holds the all-time mark for women's tennis with 24 Grand Slam titles. The 36-year-old Williams will get her next chance to tie the mark at the 2018 U.S. Open, which gets underway on August 27 at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York.

The men's Wimbledon final will take place on Sunday at 9 a.m. as 12th-ranked Novak Djokovic will look to capture his 13th Grand Slam title against 8th-ranked Kevin Anderson of South Africa.
