Carter Hutton made 39 saves for the Buffalo Sabres, but it was not enough in the team's 2-1 shootout loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night at Amalie Arena.

Rasmus Dahlin's seventh goal of the season came with under two minutes to go in the first period to give the Sabres a 1-0 lead over Tampa Bay. Zach Bogosian and Jack Eichel assisted on the period's lone goal.

Buffalo had several other chances to score, but did not convert thanks to a four-minute power play midway through the frame. J.T. Miller was penalized for the high sticking double minor, but his teammates were able to kill off the shorthanded chance.

Hutton was the late starter in goal for the blue and gold, and he stopped all 15 Tampa Bay shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes. Andrei Vasilevskiy faced 17 shots on goal by Buffalo and was able to stop 16 of them.

Tampa Bay was able to tie the game just past the halfway point of the game when Nikita Kucherov recorded his 30th goal of the season. It is also Kucherov's 100th point (30 goals and 70 assists) on the season, tying the game 1-1. Tyler Johnson records the lone assist as well.

Johan Larsson was called for the lone minor penalty of the period. The Sabres were able to kill off the forward's roughing minor without allowing a goal.

Buffalo had just six shots on goal in the middle stanza, while the Lightning recorded 14 against Hutton.

Each team was whistled for penalties late in the third period, giving the teams each power play chances. Brayden Point was given an extra two minute minor when he scuffled with Jeff Skinner. Both were called for roughing, while Point also was penalized for holding.

Neither team was able to score in the 3-on-3 overtime session, either. Hutton had to make three saves for Buffalo in overtime. Rasmus Ristolainen and Kucherov were each called for roughing when they got tangled up after the puck was frozen beside the Buffalo net.

Kucherov and Steven Stamkos both scored in the shootout for the Lightning, while Eichel and Casey Mittelstadt were not able to score on Vasilevskiy, giving Tampa Bay the win.
