The Buffalo Sabres fell short in their season opener, a 3-2 shootout loss to the Montreal Canadiens. Jason Pominville scored twice in his first game back with the Sabres on Thursday night, while Jack Eichel has an assist. Hear what both Eichel and Pominville had to say after the loss, along with what head coach Phil Housley had to say from the locker room.

Phil Housley:

On the team's performance: "I think our guys did a terrific job... We out-shot a team, we out-chanced a team, we just didn't beat them on the scoreboard. But, I really liked the effort from our guys, you can see things were coming together, we took a step forward tonight. We don't like the result, obviously, but I think we can take a lot of things from this game moving forward in the future here, starting with Saturday."

On his first regular season game as Sabres head coach: "I was just proud to be behind the bench of our players tonight because of their effort and I really appreciate the fans, they were great tonight. I think they were entertained, hopefully we can have more of that in the future. But it was exciting, being the head coach of the Buffalo Sabres. I'm really proud of this community and I love this city. Moving forward, I hope we can create some more excitement."

On Jason Pominville scoring twice in his return to the Sabres: "It's got to be great... Anytime you can contribute coming back to your team or you're a new player on a new team, it's great and you get a lot of confidence. But I think that, especially him coming back, sort of a home reunion, good to see him get a couple tonight and hopefully there's a lot more to come."

Jack Eichel:

On the team's performance: "Yea, I think we did a lot of great things, obviously you've got to stay positive. I thought we, at times, carried the pace of the game, we had some good opportunities. There's obviously things we have to clean up and get better at. We had a couple of chances on the power play, giving up that short handed goal is not what you want and we'll take a look at that tomorrow. There's a lot to be positive about, every day is another day to try and get better."

On coach Phil Housley's "shoot first" approach: "Coach Housley has been harping on us to shoot the puck, you can't score if you don't shoot it. We had some power play chances, we had a 5-on-3 for a while there in the second, we would've liked to capitalize on that one... Their penalty kill, got to give them credit, they made some good plays, Price made some good saves and they got out of it. It's a good hockey team over there and we thought we did a lot of good things, but not the outcome we want."

On not being used in the shootout: "Obviously Pommer has had a lot of success in the shootout. I think he'd probably have that one back, I think he saw some daylight there. Nine times out of ten he buries that one. I know (Josefson)'s move is pretty automatic... We've got a lot of guys that can take shootouts in here. (Lehner) makes a big save for us, we would've liked to get one for him, but we didn't and we'll continue to work on it."

Jason Pominville:

On the fan reception to his first game back with the Sabres: "We were in the tunnels, so you didn't hear all of (the fans), I definitely heard it being pretty loud when I went out and it was a pretty cool moment, for sure. I didn't really know what to expect, from me getting booed when we had shootouts here when I was with Minnesota to getting cheers when I'm here is pretty cool feeling for sure."

On the second goal of the night: "Kaner took a shot, tried to score. Jack was in a good position to get the puck back and lost his defender by making a tight turn and I was able to get lost. I think (Eichel) saw me get lost before he got the puck, so we both knew what was going on and not many guys can make that type of pass that he did and 'right place, right time.'"
