The Buffalo Sabres erupted with five goals in the second period to defeat the New Jersey Devils 5-1 at Keybank Center on Tuesday night.

Jeff Skinner kicked off the scoring for the Sabres with his 29th goal of the season early in the second period. The period also featured to first NHL goal moments from C.J. Smith and Lawrence Pilut, as well as a shorthanded goal from Jake McCabe. Casey Mittelstadt also got in on the scoring with a nifty move to get through the New Jersey defense and score his sixth goal of the season.

The Buffalo Sabres would hold down the fort in the third to earn the victory, and hold their place in the current playoff picture.

Let's go inside the locker room to see what Smith, Evan Rodrigues, Pilut, Carter Hutton and Phil Housley had to say after the victory:

C.J Smith:

On his first NHL Goal: "It was great, nobody really saw it, so I was the only one celebrating, but it was great to get it."

On what happened in second period: "After Skinner scored, I scored then we got a couple rolling in after."

Evan Rodrigues:

On the second period goal eruption: "We played well in the first and wanted to continue that into the second period.  We just kept rolling four lines."

On now losing composure in the first period: "We didn't get rewarded in the first, but sustained pressure in the offensive zone and wearing down the Devils helped us."

Lawrence Pilut:

On his goal: "Reinhart had a great screen in front then me and Ristolainan made some plays on the blue line so it was a good feeling."

On not losing hope after the first period: "We were confident and we focused on our game, We just kept at it and and kept it going."

Carter Hutton:

On getting the victory: "We we have had trouble finding to win games lately, Good to get this one and scoring five goals was huge."

On the Devils goal then calming down after: "Tough first period, especially when they score off of Coleman's skate.  I wasn't called upon a lot, but when I was, we were able to get it done."

Phil Housley:

On the Sabres play: "Total team effort tonight, even when we got down, we stuck with it.  It was good to see other contributions and a short handed goal plus two first career goals, which all points to success."

On Smith's and Pilut's first career goals: "When you play a team game, there's going top be other guys that contribute.  It was good to see them score and help their confidence going forward."
