After the teams traded goals late in the first period on Tuesday, the Buffalo Sabres went on to defeat the New York Islanders by a final score of 3-1 at KeyBank Center.

The Sabres never trailed in this game, and were able to upend a high-flying Islanders team that came into the game leading the Metropolitan Division by three points over the Washington Capitals. The win gives Buffalo 63 points on the season, and gets them to within two points of the idle Pittsburgh Penguins for the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Let's head inside the locker room to see what Jason Pominville, Jack Eichel, Linus Ullmark and Phil Housley had to say following the victory:

Jason Pominville:

On the effort: "They're one of the best defensive teams in the league. They really clogged up the neutral zone... Chances were tight, but those are playoff-type games that you like to come out on top of."

Kept a good team quiet: "Away from their push late in the third, I think we prevented them from getting big opportunities."

Jack Eichel:

The script worked: "For us, it was about keeping the puck out of our net and trying to be opportunistic when we got the chance. I thought we checked well against a team that doesn't give up a lot."

Lay in the bushes: "You have to stay patient against a team like that. They check well for 60 minutes and they don't give you a lot of room. I thought Linus [Ullmark] did a good job tonight and overall, we played a good team game."

Linus Ullmark:

Defensive success last three games: "We've been keeping it simple from the start and kept it like that for 60 minutes."

Rebound instead of hangover after Sunday's loss: "It's huge. We weren't sad about it or anything, that's how hockey is sometimes. We bounced back well tonight."

Phil Housley:

On the Islanders: "They're a very good checking team. You're not going to get a lot from them. I thought we checked well right back at them, and were able to get that first goal. I also liked how the guys responded after giving up that goal late in the first period, we were able to answer in the second."

Team defense shows up: "I think it goes back to what we talked about at the start of the season. We have to reload, and we did better pushing rushes off to the sides. There's a couple of things we could clean up from the third period, but we stuck with it pretty well against a good opponent."
