From the Locker Room: Sabres-Maple Leafs

Jason Pominville, Robin Lehner, Nate Beaulieu and Phil Housley address the media after the 5-2 loss to Toronto on Thursday

March 15, 2018 - 9:59 pm

After beating the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-3 on home ice on March 5th, the Buffalo Sabres hosted them once again at KeyBank Center just 10 days later.

This time around, however, it was the Leafs who would get the last laugh with a 5-2 victory over the Sabres.

Toronto forward James van Riemsdyk registered two goals and three points for the Leafs, while Buffalo's Sam Reinhart stayed hot as his second-half resurgence continued with a first period goal; his 18th on the year.

Go inside the locker room to hear from Jason Pominville, Robin Lehner, Nate Beaulieu and Phil Housley following the loss.

Jason Pominville:

Rusty: "You could tell that we'd been off for a few days. Slow start got us behind the eight-ball. Never recovered, especially in our 5-on-5 play."

Vibes after Nate Beaulieu's fight: "Everyone was pretty pumped. It was a great fight, he did a great job."

Robin Lehner:

Controversy with Toronto's second goal?: "I think it's questionable goaltender interference when my own player gets pushed into me by a [Leaf] skater."

Beaulieu's bout inspiring: "That's huge. Lot of credit goes to him. He stepped up against a pretty tough guy, too."

Nathan Beaulieu:

Necessary dropping of the gloves: "Obviously we've been off for a long time. It didn't seem like we were into it right away. I just wanted to try and spark the boys. Sometimes it's just something you need to do."

Time off hurts: "We had a slow start. We've had a long time to practice and get ready. It's like being off for summer, though; no matter how much preparation you do there's just something about game action that can't be [emulated]."

Phil Housley:

Sluggish: "It looked like we were off five days. I didn't think we were anticipating how fast [Toronto] was going to come out of the gate... I thought our second and third periods were much better, but we can't allow ourselves to get so far behind early."

Beaulieu vs. Matt Martin: "It really got the bench going. He did a really good job creating energy and getting some momentum for us."

Shot mentality: "A lot of those shots were contributed in the second period [19]. On the 5-on-3, too, the guys didn't panic. They kept their heads and kept the pressure on."
