From the Locker Room: Sabres-Senators

Jason Pominville, Ryan O'Reilly, Kyle Okposo and Phil Housley address the media after the 4-2 loss to Ottawa on Wednesday

April 04, 2018 - 9:28 pm

The Buffalo Sabres capped off the home portion of their 2017-18 schedule with a loss at the hands of the Ottawa Senators by a final score of 4-2.

Despite scoring just 30-seconds into the contest, Buffalo was bested from that point on as Ottawa responded just over two minutes later, and added three more tallies in the aftermath.

Ryan O'Reilly and Kyle Okposo teamed up to score the pair of Sabres goals on the evening at KeyBank Center.

Go inside the locker room to hear from Jason Pominville, O'Reilly, Okposo and Phil Housley following the loss.

Jason Pominville:

Rinse, repeat: "You said it perfectly - another home game, same result. We got a lead and then got away from what we do well. Bottom line, not good enough."

On the attempted late push for the fans: "We weren't able to get enough of a push late to give the fans one last hurrah this year. We're well aware of our struggles at home. It has to change."

Not what we planned: "I don't think anyone coming into the season envisioned this. We hoped we'd be headed in the right direction. Sometimes we are, but for the most part we're not. We seem to take one step forward and two steps back."

Ryan O'Reilly:

Tough times: "That's been our year. We've wanted to be better and we haven't. Our home record has been awful and it's something to focus on next year."

Season of surprises: "I expected a lot more. It comes down to doing it, though, and we didn't. We got worse. We've got a couple games left to work towards the right direction and see what happens."

Kyle Okposo:

Tough year: "It's disappointing. It's been a disappointing year at home. Your home building has to be a place where other teams should be scared to play. We were a long way from that this year."

More changes on the horizon: "When you're in this position that's the nature of the business. It's a success-oriented business and changes will come to get to a place we feel more satisfied with. The returners. including myself have to take good, hard looks at themselves and ask if we feel like we're giving all we possibly can for the success of this team. Gotta do some soul searching."

Phil Housley:

Better product: "We needed to be better and give more to our fans. It's a broken record; chasing games again. We go trying to make a push by the time it's too late. We have to have more of an investment from the guys in this room... We have a long way to go."

Bottom line: "We can look for a lot of excuses but the bottom line is we didn't overcome the adversity for the better part of this season."

On Nylander's season debut: "I thought he had a slow start but as the game got going he looked more comfortable and was positioning himself better."
