As his rookies hit the field for the first time in their professional lives, Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott understands he and his coaching staff can’t get too high or too low on a player based on what they see over this weekend, as hard as that may be.

“Yeah, that’s real,” he told reporters prior to the team’s first rookie minicamp practice. “You go from the Combine, which is the shorts and tee-shirt Olympics to where we are today, which is basically for all intents and purposes, jerseys and shorts and helmets now. But, yeah, let’s not get too far. Let’s not get too high or too low on anyone because we don’t start real football until training camp comes along.

“But there is the part of understanding our habits, how quickly they can pick up the scheme and some of those as evaluations and look, everything is evaluated, on the field and off the field. So that evaluation has already begun and it is an important piece that we get off to the right start here.”

That start included a full practice, similar to one during the regular season, but with no contact. The players started with stretching before heading off to their individual positions to work with their position coaches on basic techniques and drills. From there, some of the offensive and defensive skill position players worked a special teams punt drill. Then it was time for the offense and defense to separate into their own huddles and run some of their schemes and concepts, before finally each unit going against one another running plays.

Second round pick Cody Ford, who lined up as the starting right tackle Friday, echoed McDermott’s comments and just wants to take it one day at a time.

“At this moment, everybody here is at the same level as I am,” Ford said. “So, it’s not like anybody here has an advantage over the next person. So we’re all starting at the same base level and we’re all here just trying to get an opportunity.”

Here are some of the sights and sounds from Day 1 of rookie minicamp:

The rookies will be back on the field Saturday and Sunday this weekend, but there will be no media access or availability either day.
