Peterman implodes after entering in relief, Bills lose 20-13

Josh Allen was injured in the third quarter, while Nathan Peterman throws two interceptions in final two minutes

October 14, 2018 - 1:39 pm

Nathan Peterman's career with the Buffalo Bills continues to be one of football tragedy.

The Bills fell to 2-4 on the season after the a 20-13 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

Peterman entered the game for the injured Josh Allen in the third quarter, but cost the Bills late with two interceptions in the final two minutes of play, including a pick-six that gave the Texans the lead for good with 1:30 left in the game. The second-year quarterback ended the game 6-of-12 passing for 61 yards, one touchdown and those two interceptions. Allen was 10-of-17 for 84 yards before leaving the game with a right elbow injury.

The loss buried a gem of a performance from the Bills defense. The defense wound up with seven sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and allowing only 13 points to the Texans. The Bills also held off the Texans at the Buffalo one-yard line after a 41-yard pass interference penalty.

The Texans struck first on the scoreboard after a muffed punt by Ray-Ray McCloud, ending the drive with the short field with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Deshaun Watson to DeAndre Hopkins. While Tre'Davious White had solid coverage, Hopkins made the tough catch to give the Texans the lead.

After the Bills failed to get the ball moving again, the Bills' punt team was pushed back on the entire left side of the formation, leading to a blocked punt for the Texans recovered at the Bills' 21-yard line. The Buffalo defense stepped up again, limiting Houston to only a field goal and minimizing the damage on the great field position.

When Houston was driving after the two-minute warning, Buffalo's defense flexed their muscles again, coming up with an interception of a Watson pass that was caused by good pressure by the defensive line. Jordan Poyer came up with the interception to end the scoring at 10-0 at the half.

The Bills started off the second half with an interception from Lorenzo Alexander to give the Bills the ball at the Houston 30-yard line. However, the Buffalo offense could only muster a field goal to cut the lead to 10-3. The Bills got another field goal thanks to a 39-yard pass from Allen to Kelvin Benjamin to set up a 52-yard bomb from the leg of Stephen Hauschka. It may have come at a cost, as Allen left the drive with a right arm injury. Nathan Peterman checked into the game at quarterback. Peterman wound up taking advantage of a fumble recovery from Harrison Phillips with a spot on touchdown pass to Zay Jones from 16 yards out to help the Bills take their first lead of the game, 13-10.

However, after the Texans tied the game at 13, Peterman's next drive ended in disaster with the pick-six to Texans cornerback Johnathan Joseph. Peterman then threw the second interception in an attempt to come back after the Bills were suddenly behind. Texans safety Kareem Jackson came down with the pick of Peterman to seal the game.

Up next for the Bills is a trip to Indianapolis, Indiana to face the Colts next Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. from Lucas Oil Stadium. Catch the call on WGR with John Murphy, Mark Kelso and Sal Capaccio on the call.
