Backed by a four-point effort from captain Jack Eichel, the Buffalo Sabres downed the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night to complete the home-and-home sweep of their Western Conference foes.

Eichel had a factor in all four Buffalo goals scored at KeyBank Center, including the game-winner in overtime where he scored with 1:47 to go to give the Sabres a 4-3 win.

With the win, the Sabres improve to 8-1-1 on the 2019-20 season, and also improve to 5-0-0 at home for the first time since 1984.

It was San Jose striking first on the night as forward Dylan Gambrell scored his first NHL goal off a re-direction in front of Sabres goalie Carter Hutton just under six minutes into the opening period. The puck changed direction twice on its way into the back of the net; the shot from the point off the stick of defenseman Erik Karlsson, before also clanking off forward Marcus Sorensen's stick.

The Sharks ended Hutton's shutout streak at 134:22 with the first period goal. The last goal allowed by the veteran goaltender had been on October 9 against the Montreal Canadiens when defenseman Ben Chiarot scored with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation.

San Jose ended up scoring again before the end of the period as forward Patrick Marleau found defenseman Marc-Édouard Vlasic all alone deep in a play, and Vlasic put the puck in a wide-open net to extend the Sharks lead to 2-0.

Despite trailing by a pair, Buffalo out-shot San Jose 14-10 through 20 minutes of play and had their fair share of scoring opportunities in the period.

The second period went much more the Sabres' way, out-shooting the Sharks again (10-5), and they ended up finding the net twice to tie the game.

The first goal came on the power play at the 7:21 mark of the period as Eichel scored his first goal of the evening off a one-time feed from defenseman Rasmus Dahlin.

Buffalo's second goal of the period came with 31-seconds remaining as Sam Reinhart deflected a Rasmus Ristolainen slap shot past goalie Martin Jones from his office in front of the net.

The third period saw the Sabres take their first lead of the evening just 45-seconds in. This time, it was Eichel threading a pass in front of the net to a wide-open Jeff Skinner, who squeezed a shot through the body and blocker of Jones for his sixth goal of the season.

The Sabres' lead would not hold through regulation as the Sharks tied the hockey game with Erik Karlsson's first goal of the season at the 11:27 mark of the third. Karlsson was able to sneak into the play from the back door and find space through Hutton's five-hole off a feed from forward Kevin Labanc.

The Sharks controlled a majority of the play throughout the final minutes of the third, but neither team was able to find the back of the net before overtime.

There was only one shot recorded in the extra frame, and it came off the stick of Eichel during a scrum in front of the Sharks net. After a 2-on-1 rush with defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen, the puck managed to get through Jones and sit behind him in the crease. Eichel was able to push the loose puck into the net before the net came off its moorings, and the score even withstood a review for goaltender interference.
