The Boston Bruins scored twice in the opening period, helping the team defeat the Buffalo Sabres 4-0 on Thursday night at KeyBank Center.

Zdeno Chara opened the scoring with his first goal of the season. It came on Boston's fifth shot of the period. It was the Bruins' first goal of the season, after getting shut out by the Washington Capitals 7-0 last night. Brad Marchand and Charlie McAvoy received the assists on the game's first score.

Vladimir Sabotka took the first penalty of the game with under six minuted remaining in the opening stanza. The veteran forward was called for slashing, after getting a piece of David Pasternak who was skating towards the net in the offensive zone.

Marchand fed Ryan Donato at the front of the net to extend the Bruins lead to 2-0 late in the first. The forward's first goal of the season came on the man advantage. Patrice Bergeron was credited with the other assist for Boston.

Buffalo's first power play of the night came when Danton Heinen was called for slashing. He clipped Casey Nelson to draw the minor less than three minutes into the second period. The Sabres failed to score on their opening power play.

Carter Hutton stopped Sean Kuraly on a breakaway attempt midway through the period to keep Buffalo's deficit at two goals. The netminder came up big after his teammates turned the puck over in the offensive zone.

David Pasternak extended the Bruins' lead to 3-0 late in the middle period after receiving a cross-ice pass from David Krejci. Marchand collected his third point of the night with another assist, helping to initially create the play.

Boston would score with 12-seconds remaining in the game with an empty net shorthanded goal. Bergeron scored the empty net tally, with Marchand notching his fourth assist of the contest.

Buffalo recorded 15 shots on Jaroslav Halak in the final 20 minutes of play, on his way to a 32-save shutout.
