It was a low scoring affair to celebrate "70's Night" at KeyBank Center on Saturday night, but the Buffalo Sabres came out on the short end of a 1-0 loss to the New York Islanders on home ice.

The game's lone goal came just 5:19 into the opening period as Islanders forward Derick Brassard managed to bank a puck off of Sabres goalie Carter Hutton an into the back of the net from behind the Buffalo net. The goal was Brassard's fifth goal of the season, and it gave him a goal in five consecutive games.

The Islanders held the advantage through the opening 20 minutes on the scoreboard, and also had the advantage with 10 shots on goal to Buffalo's six shots.

The Sabres picked up the pace in the final 40 minutes of action, out-shooting the Islanders 21-11, but failed to find the back of the net behind goalie Semyon Varlamov. Varlamov finished the game picking up a 27-save shutout for his first shutout performance of the season.

Aside from the one mistake made in the opening period, Hutton had a very good performance for the Sabres with 20 saves on 21 shots faced in the losing effort.

The loss now drops the Sabres to 9-4-2 on the season with 20 points in the standings, which has Buffalo two points behind the Boston Bruins for the top spot in the Atlantic Division.
