The Buffalo Sabres scored first, and never looked back in their 4-1 win over the Boston Bruins on Sunday night at KeyBank Center.

Check out how the game unfolded:

First Period:

18:31 - Rick Nash does not start the game for the Bruins on the ice, but he does get a shift pretty quickly there after. There is a healthy contingent repping B's jerseys and they gave Nash quite the ovation when he touched the puck twice on his first shift for Boston.

12:56 - A very fast moving period gets slowed down by a few whistles. The latest is thanks to a Nick Baptiste minor penalty for high sticking. He got his stick into the face of Sean Kuraly as he entered the offensive zone.

9:47 - Buffalo did a nice job of killing off the minor penalty. The best chance probably came off of the stick of David Pastrnak whose heavy slap shot missed the net and went all the way back into the Boston end.

5:34 - SABRES GOAL. Buffalo fails to score on a lackluster power play, but they waste little time on 5-on-5 play getting the game's first goal. Benoit Pouliot is able to cash in a rebound chance in front of the net and it gives the home team the lead. This arena erupted in celebration on the goal. It surprised all of us with how many Bruins fans are here. 1-0 BUF.

3:29 - SABRES GOAL. The team wastes little time on their second power play of the game, and double their lead. Sam Reinhart did a good job of camping himself on top of the blue paint and Kyle Okposo ripped the shot from the right wing face-off dot. Also give credit to Ryan O'Reilly for winning the draw that started the sequence. 2-0 BUF.

End of Period

Goal Summary:

BUF: 14:26 - Benoit Pouliot (12) (Victor Antipin, Nick Baptiste). 16:31 - Kyle Okposo (11) PPG (Ryan O'Reilly)
BOS: NONE

Penalty Summary:

BUF: 7:04 - Nick Baptiste (2 min., high sticking). 19:26 - Sam Reinhart (2 min., tripping)
BOS: 12:15 - Brad Marchand (2 min., slashing). 16:16 - Zdeno Chara (2 min., hooking). 19:21 - Team (2 min., too many men on the ice)

Shots on Goal:

BUF - 6, BOS - 8

Second Period:

16:20 - BRUINS GOAL. You could just feel a goal coming on for the visitors as they pressed the play to start the middle frame. Charlie McAvoy took the shot that eventual halved the Sabres' lead. Chad Johnson really did not have much of a chance. 2-1 BUF.

12:10 - SABRES GOAL. Buffalo had a little bit of a wakeup call after the Boston goal early in this period, and the blue and gold aptly responded with a goal of their own. Rasmus Ristolainen did a good job of keeping the puck in the offensive zone, and Evan Rodrigues used a slapshot to bury the chance in the top corner of the net. 3-1 BUF.

9:44 - Some good action at both ends of the ice. First Nash cranks the goal post after beating Johnson with a shot toward the far post, then Zemgus Girgensons could not connect on a pass through the Boston crease. That last sequence was exciting.

7:26 - Buffalo is able to kill off Pouliot's minor for holding. He got tangled up with Nash in the neutral zone as they were fighting for a loose puck. This has been a good bounce back game for the Sabres today.

End of Period

Goal Summary:

BUF: 7:50 - Evan Rodrigues (5) (Sam Reinhart, Rasmus Ristolainen)
BOS: 3:35 - Charlie McAvoy (6) (David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand)

Penalty Summary:

BUF: 10:16 - Benoit Pouliot (2 min., holding)
BOS: NONE

Shots on Goal:

BUF - 8 (14), BOS - 16 (24)

Third Period:

18:44 - A good, aggressive start to the third period leads to a power play for the blue and gold. Kevan Miller trips Rodrigues in the offensive zone, and will head to the penalty box. It felt like the puck never left Buffalo's end for the final five or six minutes of the last period, it is good to see the team coming out with a jump this frame to try and get something positive going their way.

16:38 - SABRES GOAL. The power play may have expired, but Marco Scandella takes a shot from a bad angle and it finds its way past Anton Khudobin and into the net to extend the Buffalo lead to three goals. We'll see if the Sabres can lock this game down from here on out. 4-1 BUF.

12:42 - I like this third period so far by the Sabres. They are not sitting back and letting the Bruins come at them. By locking things down, I want to see the team possess the puck and make it hard for the Bruins to get any offensive momentum their way.

5:20 - Buffalo continues to press the play, but it looks like the Bruins have run out of gas. They are slowing down and playing right in the Sabres' hands.

5:13 - Johan Larsson is called for slashing, let's see if his teammates can kill off the minor.
