Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) - It’s really been no secret that Ralph Krueger was going to keep Steve Smith on his coaching staff. Jason Botterill had told all the coaches except Smith that they could look for work over a month ago.

Watch NHL games now on fuboTV.

Smith was hired by Phil Housley before last season after coaching in Carolina.

As we reported a few days ago, Mike Bales has officially been named goaltending coach to replace Andrew Allen. Bales played 18 seasons as a professional and also has been an assistant coach with the Hurricanes and Penguins.

Don Granato comes over from the Chicago Blackhawks. Granato has coached at many different levels. He was the associate head coach for one season at Wisconsin. He was an assistant with the St. Louis Blues, and he was the head coach for seven seasons in the AHL at Worcester and with the Chicago Wolves.

He coached in the USHL with Green Bay and Wisconsin, and in the ECHL with Columbus and Peoria.

Granato was a head coach and assistant coach for the United States and their national program.

Gone from the coaching staff are Davis Payne, Chris Hajt and Tom Ward.
