The Buffalo Sabres erased two separate two-goal deficits on Thursday night, but it was not enough as the Detroit Red Wings grab a 5-4 overtime win at KeyBank Center.

The team would not be so lucky in their second penalty kill, however, as Tyler Bertuzzi scored on the man advantage to give Detroit a 1-0 lead over the Sabres with eight minutes to go in the first period. The goal came less than a minute into Rasmus Dahlin's hooking minor. Anthony Mantha and Niklas Kronwall assisted on the game's first goal.

Kyle Okposo was able to get the blue and gold on the board and trim the deficit to 2-1 late in a power play chance. Okposo's 12th goal of the season beat Howard and came while Luke Witkowski was in the penalty box for tripping. The assists were credited to Casey Mittelstadt and Brandon Montour.

The game's equalizing goal was scored by Marco Scandella less than three minutes to go in the second period. The goal was the defenseman's sixth of the season and tied the game 2-2. Zemgus Girgensons and Johan Larsson assisted on the even strength goal.

Dylan Larkin broke the tie early in the third period with his 29th goal of the season, giving Detroit a 3-2 lead over the Sabres. Mantha recorded his third assist of the game on the goal, in addition to Madison Bowey. The forward scored again later in the third extended Detroit's lead to 4-2 in the final frame. Larkin's 30th goal of the season came with less than seven minutes to go in regulation.

Mittelstadt scored two minutes later to bring Buffalo back within a goal, 4-3. The goal was the forward's 12th of the season. Jeff Skinner and Jason Pominville assisted on the goal. Less than a minute later, Jack Eichel was able to use a strong wrist shot in the slot to beat Howard and tie the game 4-4 in the third period. Victor Olofsson recorded his first career NHL point on Eichel's 27th goal of the year. Sam Reinhart also assisted on the game-tying goal.
