The Buffalo Sabres scored early and never trailed in their 3-1 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday night at KeyBank Center.

Casey Mittelstadt scored just 48-seconds into the game to give the blue and gold a 1-0 lead over the Coyotes. Conor Sheary made the initial play in the offensive zone to setup the goal, and was credited with the lone assist for Buffalo.

Six minutes later, Jeff Skinner scored his 22nd goal of the season to extend the Sabres lead to 2-0 over Arizona. Jack Eichel used a pass from the right wing side to Skinner, who was skating into the slot all by himself and beat Darcy Kuemper on the blocker side. Eichel and Sam Reinhart received the assists on the score.

The Coyotes struck back with a goal to cut the deficit to 2-1 about a minute later. Christian Fischer was able to bank a wraparound chance off both of Carter Hutton's pads to help the puck cross the goal line. The only assist on Fischer's seventh goal of the season went to Richard Panik.

Both teams recorded seven shots on goal in the opening frame. It was a quick pace, with neither team being called for a minor penalty.

Neither team was able to score in the second period, despite each collecting double-digits shot totals. The Sabres were credited with 15 shots on goal, while Arizona had 13 shots. Hutton stopped all 13, while Kuemper was up to the task at the other end.

There were no penalties called for the second straight period, with neither team having a power play chance through forty minutes.

The first penalty of the night was called on Lawrence Pilut. The defenseman high-sticked Clayton Keller and was whistled for a minor. However, the Sabres were able to kill off the minor without much issue to preserve the one-goal lead.

Evan Rodrigues scored on Buffalo's second shot of the third period to put the lead back to two goals, 3-1. The goal was unassisted.

Skinner was called for hooking with just over two minutes to go in regulation, but the Coyotes' power play was short lived. Derek Stepan was called for a hooking minor of his own.

The Sabres limited Arizona to six shots on goal in the third period to secure the victory. Hutton stopped all six in the period and 25 of 26 in the game.
