A pair of special teams goals helped pace the Vegas Golden Knights to a 4-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night at T-Mobile Arena. Vegas scored a power play goal in the first period, followed up by a shorthanded score in the second frame.

Vegas thought they had the lead nearly nine minutes into the first period when Shea Theodore scored. However, the Sabres challenged for offside and it was confirmed. The goal was overturned and the score remained 0-0.

The Golden Knights took advantage of their lone power play chance in the first period. Jonathan Marchessault netted his third goal of the year on a one-time shot after William Karlsson made a cross-ice pass. Karlsson and Reilly Smith were credited with assists on the score that made it 1-0 Vegas. The goal came while Marco Scandella was in the box for holding.

Buffalo recorded five shots on goal in the opening period, while Vegas recorded 12.

Cody Eakin doubled Vegas' lead with a short handed goal early in the middle frame. Nick Holden was in the penalty box when Eakin scored unassisted to make it 2-0 for the Golden Knights.

The Sabres out-shot Vegas 11-10 in the second stanza, but failed to score against Marc-Andre Fleury.

Buffalo had three power play chances in the final period, but failed to capitalize on all of their chances.

William Karlsson added the third Vegas goal, his first of the season, to increase the Golden Knights lead to 3-0. Smith was given the lone assist on the goal.

Vladimir Sobotka scored Buffalo's lone goal of the game with just seconds remaining in regulation. The goal was challenged by Vegas for goaltender interference, but the goal was upheld. Kyle Okposo and Jake McCabe assisted on the goal that trimmed the deficit to 3-1. Marchessault would add his second goal of the game with an empty net tally that Karlsson assisted on for his third point of the night. The empty net goal brought the score to 4-1 with 13-seconds to go in the game.
