Jeff Skinner scored three times, including twice in the second period, to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday afternoon at Staples Center.

Buffalo went to the power play less than a minute into the game as Jake Muzzin was called for interference 17-seconds into the game. The Sabres recorded one shot on goal on their man advantage and failed to score. Marco Scandella was whistled for the Sabres' first penalty of the game when he was called for hooking.

Jason Pominville got the Sabres on the scoresheet first with a goal midway through the opening period. The Kings challenged for goaltender interference, and it was determined to be a good goal. Both Pominville and Jack Eichel crashed the front of the net and created the scoring chance that Jonathan Quick batted backward into his own net, giving the Sabres the 1-0 lead. Eichel and Jake McCabe were credited with the assists.

Linus Ullmark got the start in goal and stopped all nine L.A. shots in the opening period. Ullmark did not allow a goal in his first appearance, one week ago at Arizona. He helped the team kill off both shorthanded chances surrendered, not allowing any good scoring opportunities.

Just over three minutes into the second period, Skinner doubled Buffalo's lead after some strong work along the half wall by Jack Eichel. The Sabres captain and Pominville received assists on Skinner's second goal of the year that made it 2-0 Buffalo.

Skinner once again, beating Quick with a shot to extend the Sabres lead to 3-0 in the second period. Skinner's third goal of the season was assisted by Scandella and Pominville.

Zach Bogosian scored with just seconds to go in the middle stanza to extend Buffalo's lead to 4-0 through forty minutes. It was Bogosian's first goal since March 27, 2017 in a 3-2 win against the Florida Panthers.

Drew Doughty wired a shot from the slot on the power play to cut the Buffalo lead to 4-1 with just under eight minutes to go in regulation. The goal came on the power play, and was assisted by Alex Iafallo and Jeff Carter. Anze Kopitar set a screen in front of the net to help in the goal as well.

Skinner's last goal of the game came with an empty net, giving him the hat trick. Eichel and Evan Rodrigues assisted on the goal that made it 5-1 with seconds to go.
