The Buffalo Sabres put up 42 shots on goal and rallied for two goals in the final minutes of the third period on Wednesday, but it was not enough. Buffalo lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 at PPG Paints Arena in the second-to-last preseason game of the year.

The Penguins strike first as Jake Guentzel is left all alone next to the Buffalo and easily puts in a pass from Sidney Crosby. Victor Antipin answered for the Sabres less than two minutes later to tie the score at 1-1. The shot came from just inside the blue line and stayed along the ice to get underneath Antti Niemi and across the goal line. Zemgus Girgensons and Ryan O'Reilly were credited with the assists on Antipin's first goal as a Sabre.

Johan Larsson took the game's first penalty for holding, but the blue and gold were able to kill off the minor without giving up the go-ahead goal to Pittsburgh. The Sabres outshot Pittsburgh 14-9 in the opening twenty minutes. Chad Johnson stopped eight of the Penguins' nine shots, while Niemi made 13 saves for Pittsburgh.

Crosby made a strong move to the front of the Buffalo goal less than four minutes into the second period and was rewarded with a goal for his efforts. The Penguins' captain was able to knock the puck past Johnson and give the team their second lead of the night, this time 2-1. Sheary and Guentzel were given assists on Crosby's goal.

Buffalo was given their first power play of the night thanks to a minor called on Bryan Rust. The Sabres did not score on the man advantage, but on their next opportuntity Nic Deslauriers is able to convert and make it 2-2 late in the middle stanza. Johan Larsson helped create the scoring opportunity, and was rewarded with an assist on the score.

The blue and gold were seconds away from killing off their second penalty of the night, but Justin Schultz was able to net another go-ahead goal to give the Penguins a 3-2 lead. The goal came with four seconds remaining on the power play, and with a minute to go in the second period. Brian Dumoulin and Sheary picked up the assists on the special team's marker.

Neither side was able to change the score again until Phil Kessel added to the Pittsburgh lead, 4-2, just over six minutes into the third period. Evgeni Malkin and Carl Hagelin were credited with the assists on the goal that put Buffalo down by a pair. The lead ballooned to three for Pittsburgh thanks to a power play marker minutes later. Malkin notched his second point of the game with the power play goal that hit a Buffalo defender at the side of the net. Kessel and Guentzel assisted on the goal that made it 5-2 Pittsburgh in the third stanza.

The blue and gold scored twice with under a minute to go in regulation to cut the deficit to one goal. Jacob Josefson was credited with the first of the two goals that made the score 5-3 in favor of Pittsburgh, while Evander Kane made it a one-goal game with a goal from the slot, 5-4. However, that is all the rally Buffalo could mount.

The Sabres drop their fourth game of the preseason with one final game remaining on Friday against the New York Islanders.
