The Buffalo Sabres continue to slide down the Eastern Conference standings with the latest blow in the form of a 4-1 loss at the hands of the New Jersey Devils on Sunday at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

The first period kicked off with a fast pace, with both teams often trading scoring chances that had both Sabres goalie Carter Hutton and Devils goalie Cory Schneider on their toes often. Both teams got a power play in the first, but neither team could capitalize on the man advantage. For Buffalo, it would be the first penalty taken by the team in three games, but the Sabres penalty kill was up to the task after taking a too many men bench minor.

The period ended with neither team being able to find the back of the net.

Miles Wood opened the scoring for New Jersey in the second period, scoring on a two-on-one rush with Kyle Palmieri to give the Devils the 1-0 lead. New Jersey followed it up with a power play goal from Jasper Bratt to make it 2-0. However, Buffalo struck back after a power play expired, Sam Reinhart scored his 14th goal of the season with less than a minute left in the period to cut the lead to 2-1. With that goal, Reinhart recorded his 51st point on the year, which surpasses his career best for points in a season.

While the Sabres controlled play and dominated possession in the third period, the final period once again did not go the way that Buffalo needed it to. Palmieri added his third point of the night with the insurance marker to make it 3-1. After a nifty move to get around Lawrence Pilut, Palmieri put a high shot to the short-side of Hutton to put the Sabres in a two-goal hole with 5:51 to go in regulation. Joey Anderson added the empty net goal for New Jersey when Buffalo pulled Hutton with an opportunity on the power play.
