In the first of two games for the NHL's Global Series in Sweden, the Buffalo Sabres dropped a 3-2 decision to the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm.

The loss gives Buffalo its fourth straight defeat, and drops the Sabres to 9-5-2 in the standings. Tampa Bay's win also allows them to creep closer to the Sabres in the standings now with 16 points to Buffalo's 20 points.

Heading into the NHL Global Series, the Sabres have the most Swedish players on their roster in the league with six. This event was a homecoming for the likes of forwards Marcus Johansson, Victor Olofsson and Johan Larsson, defensemen Rasmus Dahlin and Lawrence Pilut, and goalie Linus Ullmark.

The Lightning only has one player on its roster from Sweden, but it happens to be one of the best defenseman in the league in Victor Hedman.

The first period saw the Lightning posses the puck for a majority of the time, which led to plenty of scoring opportunities.

The scoring opened just 3:19 into the first period when Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov finished off a 2-on-1 rush with teammate Brayden Point to give Tampa Bay the 1-0 lead. The play developed after Sabres defenseman Jake McCabe pinched into the offensive zone, and failed to get back in time to cover a wide-open Kucherov for the one-time feed.

Later in the period, Dahlin found himself in penalty trouble again as he took a two-minute penalty for interference. Less than a minute later, Lightning forward Alex Killorn was able to get a piece of a Hedman slapshot from the point to up Tampa Bay's lead to 2-0.

Buffalo ended up facing a 2-0 deficit following the opening 20 minutes, and were also out-shot in the period by a 13-9 total.

The second period saw the Lightning jump all over the Sabres, out-chancing the Sabres in the early goings and finishing the period with the 13-5 shot advantage.

However, the Sabres did cut the Tampa Bay lead in half when Sam Reinhart beautifully tipped a Rasmus Ristolainen wrist shot from the point and through the legs of Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy. The goal was originally waved off by the officials for being re-directed by a high stick, but the review determined that Reinhart's stick was below the cross bar and the call was overturned.

The Sabres got jumped on in the third period again, getting out-played by the Lightning with much of the play being in Buffalo's defensive zone.

Tampa Bay was able to up its lead to 3-1 at the 7:45 mark when Yanni Gourde netted a rebound in front of the net that Ullmark could not get a piece of with his arm or his glove.

The Sabres responded less than four minutes later as Reinhart scored his second goal of the game on a nice wrist shot from the faceoff circle. After a glorious chance in the goal crease for Olofsson, the puck found its way to Reinhart, who skated into open space and fired a shot through a screen in front of the net.

The Sabres managed to get a few good looks on Vasilevskiy towards the end of the game with the Sabres' net empty, but the effort was not enough as the Lightning held on for the win.

Ullmark stood tall for the Sabres in the losing effort, making 31 saves on 34 shots faced.
