Sabres get a wild 6-5 overtime win in Montreal

Jeff Skinner and Vladimir Sobotka score twice Rasmus; Ristolainen nets the game winner

November 08, 2018 - 7:56 pm

A back-and-forth, action-packed game in Montreal saw the Buffalo Sabres prevail over the Canadiens in overtime on Thursday, 6-5. Rasmus Ristolainen netted the winner 1:38 into the extra frame with a slapshot that beat Carey Price cleanly on the glove side. Prior to Ristolainen's winner, Jeff Skinner netted a pair of goals in regulation, including the game-tying goal in the third period. Vladimir Sobotka also scored twice for Buffalo and Jack Eichel picked up two more assists.

After killing off an early Montreal 5-on-3 power play, the Sabres got on the board first. Sobotka scored the first of his two goals on a 2-on-1 break with Evan Rodrigues at 6:08 of the first, but the Canadiens responded a little over three minutes later on Jonathan Drouin's fifth goal of the season. Sobotka put Buffalo back in front later in the period, with Rodrigues and Sam Reinhart, once again, picking up the assists. However, the lead was short-lived as Matthew Peca's first goal of the season tied the score 2-2 only 10-seconds later.

Conor Sheary's sixth goal, and third in three games, made it 3-2 Buffalo at 15:52 of the opening period, but the Canadiens came right back again on Andrew Shaw's goal less than a minute later.

Buffalo took its fourth lead of the night 5:34 into the second on Jeff Skinner's 10th goal of the season. Jack Eichel fired a shot off the post and Skinner put home the big rebound making it 4-3, but Montreal once again wasted little time in evening the score. Tomas Tatar capitalized on an odd-man rush with Max Domi, good for Domi's third assist of the night.

The Canadiens took the lead for the first time late in the second period on Nicolas Deslauriers' shorthanded wrist shot. The former Sabre snuck behind the defense, took a pass from Peca and beat Linus Ullmark to put Montreal ahead 5-4 going into the third.

Not to be outdone, Skinner notched his second goal of the game just 2:20 into the final period, making it 5-5. Eichel won a faceoff to the left of Carey Price and shifted the puck immediately to Skinner, who put it home for his 11th goal of the season.

About two minutes after Skinner's tying goal, the Sabres found themselves with two men in the penalty box for the second time in the game - and for the second time in the game, Buffalo successfully killed it off. Carter Hutton, who replaced Ullmark at the start of the third period, kept Montreal out of the net for the remainder of the game and Ristolainen proved to be the hero in overtime.

Skinner continued his torrid streak - each of his 11 goals have come in his last 12 games - while his linemate, Eichel, stayed hot with two more assists. The Buffalo captain has racked up 14 points in his last nine games.

Ullmark, who started the game, made 27 saves while Hutton finished with five saves in relief. For Montreal, Price turned aside 25 out of 32 shots.
