Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) - The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Wednesday that Mike Bales has resigned as goaltending coach. On Friday, the Buffalo Sabres officially announced the hiring of Bales as the team's new goaltending coach, replacing Andrew Allen.

Bales spent two seasons coaching the Hurricanes goalies. Petr Mrazek and Curtis McElhinney did not have great regular season numbers, but Carolina did make the playoffs and got to the Eastern Conference Final.

Bales also couldn’t help goalie Scott Darling acquired from Chicago and he'll likely be bought out.

Bales worked with Jason Botterill in Pittsburgh and helped Matt Murray backstop two Stanley Cup runs.

Bales never played with the Sabres, but he did spend a brief time in Rochester.

Allen was hired in 2015 to coach the Sabres goalies. In his first two seasons, he got pretty good years out of Robin Lehner, but the last two seasons have not been good for the Sabres netminders.

It was over a month ago that we reported that the whole coaching staff other than Steve Smith were told they could look for other jobs.
