The Buffalo Sabres opened the 2018 preseason with a 4-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday night at Nationwide Arena in Columbus.

Alex Nylander and Tage Thompson both tallied two assists in the win, leading the team in points for the evening. Patrik Berglund, Nathan Beaulieu, Kyle Criscuolo and Andrew Oglevie scored for the Sabres, while goalie Linus Ullmark stopped 20 of 21 shots faced in two periods of action. Jonas Johansson relieved him in the third period and was a perfect 16-for-16 for saves.

After a scoreless first period of play, it was Nylander and Thompson going to work down low, creating a scoring chance early in the period. The play was capped off with Nylander feeding Berglund for the goal just 22-seconds into the period.

After a penalty to Columbus defenseman David Savard for high-sticking, the Sabres responded on the powerplay with a blast from Beaulieu, thanks to some solid puck movement again involving Nylander and Thompson. Savard scored just eight seconds later to cut the deficit to one, but Criscuolo scored to less than seven minutes later to make it 3-1 to end the second period.

Oglevie tapped in a rebound to round out the scoring in the third period, and the Sabres come away with the win, despite being out-shot 37-20 in the game.
