The Buffalo Sabres needed just 22 shots on goal to help defeat the New York Islanders 3-1 on Tuesday night at KeyBank Center.

Jeff Skinner's 34th goal of the season came late in the first period and gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead over the Islanders. The game's first goal came off of a faceoff win by Jack Eichel. Skinner beat Robin Lehner with the wrist shot for the lead over the visitors. Eichel was credited with the lone assist on the goal.

The Islanders tied the score with less than a minute to go in the opening frame. Casey Cizikas scored the goal for the visitors that made the score 1-1, it is his 13th goal of the year. Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck assisted on the goal.

Buffalo recorded five shots on goal in the first period, with Lehner making four saves against his former team. Linus Ullmark stopped seven of the eight Islanders shots on goal as well. Neither team had a power play chance in the opening 20 minutes.

Eichel helped create the Sabres' second goal of the game with a backhand pass to the front of the net that Jason Pominville was able to slam home. His 13th goal of the season came nearly seven minutes into the middle stanza, giving the Sabres a 2-1 lead. Once again, Eichel was credited with the only assist on the goal.

Neither team was able to create much offense in the final period, but the Sabres broke through with less than three minutes to go. Kyle Okposo took a shot that got through Lehner's pads, and Johan Larsson was able to slap the puck across the goal line to extend Buffalo's lead to 3-1 late. Okposo and Zemgus Girgensons assisted on the score.

Buffalo out-shot the Islanders 12-10 in the third period, scoring once in the final frame to secure the win. New York had more shots overall in the game 25-22. Ullmark made 24 saves to help in the win. The Sabres were not called for a single penalty in the game, and New York was penalized just once.
