Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) - The Sabres had a lot of players out injured on Thursday. Jack Eichel, Rasmus Ristolainen, Marco Scandella, Zach Bogosian, Johan Larsson, Conor Sheary and Matt Hunwick all missed practice. Phil Housley refused to get specific with any of them, “Just to make everything clear, the guys that were not on the ice won’t be coming on the trip or playing tomorrow. They’ve got some minor ailments, they’re all day-to-day, it’s just precautionary, so we’re erring on the side of caution and right now, they’re day-to-day.”

The Sabres waived Taylor Fedun and Scott Wedgewood to send them to Rochester. Also going to the Amerks were Rasmus Asplund, Will Borgen and Victor Olofsson.

There are still some young players up. Phil Housley said guys like Alex Nylander, Tage Thompson, Evan Rodrigues, Nick Baptiste Lawrence Pilut, Brendan Guhle and Justin Bailey are still fighting for jobs. The head coach said, “There’s a reason why guys are playing tomorrow and there are some evaluations going on.”

We know the Sabres will have Eichel and Casey Mittelstadt down the middle. Patrik Berglund and Vladimir Sobotka have both played the whole preseason down the middle and I’m not sure there’s room in the lineup for both to play center. Housley said, “We’ll have to evaluate that after this last game and see where we are from a health standpoint, their versatility is huge, they can play both wing and center, but I like that they’re both versatile and that they can both play wing and center.”

Thursday’s lines:

53 Skinner - 17 Sobotka - 23 Reinhart

20 Wilson - 37 Mittelstadt - 21 Okposo

28 Girgensons - 71 Rodrigues - 29 Pominville (Baptiste)

92 Nylander - 10 Berglund - 72 Thompson

82 Beaulieu - 8 Nelson

26 Dahlin - 19 McCabe

45 Guhle - 5 Tennyson

24 Pilut - 95 Bailey

That means Housley will have to scratch two forwards in Oshawa on Friday and one defenseman. I would like to see Pilut get another chance after two good games and then a really bad one in Pittsburgh. There’s no morning skate in Oshawa, but check back Friday morning when I preview Lawrence Pilut’s first month with the Sabres.

The Amerks have a preseason game on Thursday at HarborCenter. Rochester will play Toronto beginning at 7:00.
