The Buffalo Sabres scored twice in the final three minutes to force extra time, and defeat the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 in a shootout at KeyBank Center.

Nathan Beaulieu scored nearly five minutes into the first period to give the Sabres a 1-0 lead over the Vancouver Canucks. The defenseman was able to pinch in from the blue line and tip home a cross-ice pass from Kyle Okposo to give the game its first score. Okposo and Rasmus Dahlin assisted on the goal.

The Canucks out-shot Buffalo 15-10 in the first period, with Carter Hutton making 15 saves for the home team. Neither team went on the power play in a quick opening 20 minutes.

Both Sam Reinhart and Jack Eichel went to the locker room early in the first period, and neither returned in the first. Reinhart returned for the second period. He was hit in the face with a puck in the first. Eichel re-joined the team part-way through the middle stanza.

The first penalty of the game went to Antoine Roussel for interference, giving the Sabres the man advantage. However, the Sabres could not convert on their opportunity.

Loui Eriksson scored with less than two minutes to go in the second period to tie the game 1-1. He was being knocked to the ice by Jake McCabe as he was able to shove the puck into the net for Vancouver. Jake Virtanen scored about a minute later to give the visitors a 2-1 lead heading into the intermission.

The Canucks added to their lead early in the third frame with a goal by Erik Gudbranson. His second goal of the season gave Vancouver a 3-1 lead just four minutes into the frame.

Both teams traded power play opportunities in the middle half of the third. First, Johan Larsson was called for tripping, while Virtanen was whistled for high sticking. Buffalo was able to kill off Larsson's minor, thanks in part to the Canucks penalty.

Jeff Skinner brought the blue and gold within a goal, 3-2, with his 12th goal of the season. Reinhart made the pass from below the goal line that helped setup the score, he and Rasmus Ristolianen assisted on the goal.

Reinhart scored less than a minute later to tie the score 3-3 with about two and a half minutes to go in regulation. Ristolainen and Dahlin assisted on the game-tying goal.

Neither team was able to score in overtime. Buffalo had to kill off two penalties. One was a carry over of Evan Rodrigues' tripping minor from the end of regulation, and then with a minute to go in the extra frame Skinner was called for tripping.

Eichel and Casey Mittelstadt scored in the shootout for Buffalo to help secure the win. Hutton made two saves for the Sabres as well.
