Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) - Jeff Skinner was in Buffalo on Tuesday to sign his new contract and meet with the media. Skinner came to terms on a deal Friday night and is in Buffalo for the next eight seasons. Skinner talked about why he chose to stay in Buffalo and he did say, “I love it here.”

Skinner could’ve waited until the last week of June and started talking to other teams, but in the end, he didn’t want to, “I just didn’t feel the need to get to that point because I like it here, so I didn’t need to look elsewhere.”

In April, Skinner said that it’s going to be a long process for him as he needed to think about everything. He was true to that and said, “I think there’s a number of things. When you go through this process you try to weigh what’s important to you and then you weigh the pros and cons and for me, the top things on my list were all the positive things about Buffalo and right at the top, I want to win.

“I think with the players we have, I think that’s a realistic thing to think and then you go down the list like living situation and how your family’s going to be affected and in all those things, they lined up positively.”

Skinner likes having Jack Eichel, Rasmus Dahlin, Sam Reinhart, Casey Mittelstadt and others that make up the young core. He said all season he believes in those guys and they played a key role in him staying, “There’s some pretty good young talent and as they grow older, they’re going to mature, they’re going to keep taking next steps and if you take a look at the organization with the talent it has, there are a lot of positive signs there.”

After Ralph Krueger was hired, he phoned Skinner to tell him what his plans were. Skinner didn’t really get into it with him, but I wondered what the winger would like to know from his new head coach, “I didn’t have any specific questions. He sort of introduced himself and for me as soon as it was announced, I got texts from people that had had relationships with him in the past and every text or call I got was extremely positive, so that was a really good sign and then when I talked to him I tried to get to know him and get to know what his motivation is and what his goals are and how he goes about doing his business and for me listening to him talk, it’s apparent his passion and his excitement and his resume speaks for itself.”

After the questions were over, they are a big cheer from the back of the lobby at the arena. Some fans had gotten in and when Skinner heard them, he went back to thank them and took pictures with them.
