The Buffalo Sabres held on, despite a late onslaught, to defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 on Tuesday night at KeyBank Center.

Jeff Skinner broke a scoreless tie with just over two minutes to go in the opening period with a goal to make it 1-0 Buffalo. Skinner's goal came on a rebound chance after a face-off win in the offensive zone. Sam Reinhart took the initial shot on goal before Skinner swept the second chance home on the backhand. Reinhart and Nathan Beaulieu were credited with the assists on the goal.

Erik Cernak was called for the first penalty of the game a minute later. The rookie was whistled for interference. Buffalo did not convert in the first period, and had nearly a minute remaining of carry over time in the middle frame.

Buffalo recorded 11 shots on goal in the first, while the Lightning was stopped on all eight of their shots in the opening twenty minutes.

Both teams scored within seconds of one another in the middle stanza, giving the blue and gold a 2-1 lead. Kyle Okposo netted his fifth goal of the season to extend the Sabres' lead to 2-0 momentarily. While Anthony Cirelli scored at the other end to cut Buffalo's lead to 2-1.

Zemgus Girgensons was called for holding, giving the Lightning their first man advantage of the game with just over five minutes to go in the second period. At the time of the minor penalty, Tampa Bay was out-shooting the home team 9-2 in the period, and 17-13 overall in the game. Tampa Bay recorded just two shots on goal on the power play and failed to score the equalizer on the power play.

Skinner and Tyler Johnson each were called for minor penalties that offset, midway through the final frame. Skinner was called for interference, while Johnson was penalized for slashing.

Buffalo was able to hold on, despite Tampa Bay using an extra skater over the final minute and a half of regulation. Hutton made several saves, and got some help from the goal post to preserve the lead and win.
