Ryan O'Reilly had three points, and Sam Reinhart scored twice to help lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 5-3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night at KeyBank Center.

First Period:

18:28 - It is clear that the Sabres are looking to establish the play against a Tampa team that played last night. Even Casey Nelson has gotten in on the scoring rush early to press the play.

13:35 - SABRES GOAL. Nick Baptiste's speed was on display perfectly for the game's first goal. He leads the rush out of his own zone and has Zemgus Girgensons with him. The two criss-cross in the Tampa end and a nifty pass puts the puck on Baptiste's stick to slide between the legs of Louis Domingue. Excellent play for the goal. 1-0 BUF.

9:33 - This has been a good first half of the period for Buffalo. They are taking the play to Tampa and not letting the visitors get set in the offensive zone. They should be doing this more often.

7:50 - Scott Wilson heads to the penalty box for using his glove to cover up the puck before brushing it away from harm. The delay of game penalty gives Tampa Bay their first real chance at the game-tying goal in the game.

6:37 - LIGHTNING GOAL. Buffalo could not escape the penalty kill without allowing a goal, thanks to some slick passing and puck movement by Tampa. Nikita Kucherov received a Victor Hedman pass and immediately put it to the front of the net, where Yanni Gourde buried it. 1-1 tie.

3:48 - The fans are not happy as Girgensons will sit for tripping. It was a bad call by the officials, for sure. Tampa goes to the PP for the second time in the game.

End of Period

Goal Summary:

BUF: 6:25 - Nick Baptiste (2) (Zemgus Girgensons)
TB: 13:23 - Yanni Gourde (22) PPG (Nikita Kucherov, Victor Hedman)

Penalty Summary:

BUF: 12:10 - Scott Wilson (2 min., closing hand on puck). 16:12 - Zemgus Girgensons (2 min., tripping)
TB: 20:00 - Slater Koekkoek (2 min., high sticking)

Shots on Goal:

BUF - 9, TB - 14

Second Period:

18:44 - SABRES GOAL. Evan Rodrigues sets up the scoring play perfectly from the slot by feeding a pass to Sam Reinhart by the side of the net. He dishes to Ryan O'Reilly, and the shot is stopped. However, Reinhart is right there to slam the puck home into an open net. A nice way to start the period for the blue and gold. 2-1 BUF.

17:46 - The period is starting off very sloppy for Tampa. A mental mistake results in a too many men on the ice penalty, and another opportunity for Buffalo on the power play.

13:04 - Tampa has a two-man advantage for 1:52 as Girgensons takes a minor seconds after Johan Larsson took a seat in the penalty box. This could spell trouble for Buffalo.

9:25 - Buffalo did a great job blocking shots and clogging the shooting lanes, and nearly got rewarded at the other end. Scott Wilson had a near-breakaway but broke his stick on the shot.

6:41 - LIGHTNING GOAL. Woof, what a sequence for Buffalo that leads to the game-tying goal for a second time in the game. An errant pass between Chad Johnson and Victor Antipin results in a goal on a wide open net for Tampa Bay. 2-2 tie.

4:13 - SABRES GOAL. Scott Wilson was due a break after having a couple of close calls this period. Casey Nelson winds up from the point, and the puck goes off of Wilson before finding the net. Third lead for Buffalo in the game. 3-2 BUF.

End of Period

Goal Summary:

BUF: 1:16 - Sam Reinhart (12) PPG (Ryan O'Reilly, Evan Rodrigues). 15:47 - Scott Wilson (4) (Casey Nelson)
TB: 13:19 - Vladislav Namestnikov (19)

Penalty Summary:

BUF: 6:49 - Johan Larsson (2 min., slashing).6:56 - Zemgus Girgensons (2 min., tripping)
TB: 2:07 - Team (2 min., too many men on the ice)

Shots on Goal:

BUF - 11 (20), TB - 9 (23)

Third Period:

17:42 - Not a good start to the period for the Sabres. Tampa Bay has found their legs and is trying to establish some type of momentum in the final twenty minutes.

16:19 - SABRES GOAL. Ryan O'Reilly was a man possessed on the power play, and it doubles Buffalo's lead with less than a period to go. He was strong on the puck and fed it back to the point, then used a bad angle show after Kyle Okposo's shot hit the end boards. 4-2 BUF.

8:24 - LIGHTNING GOAL. Tampa Bay is not able to score on the power play, per se, but Kyle Okposo being out of the play coming out of the penalty box creates an odd-man situation in the Buffalo end and Ryan Callahan is able to bring the visitors back within a goal with his third of the season. 4-3 BUF.

3:19 - This has been a fact paced and fun period of play. Tampa might have had the better of the play, but Buffalo has not sat back and played a defenxive game either. We'll see if they can hold on for the last few minutes here.

1:22 - Louis Domingue has gone to the bench in favor of the extra attacker.

:7.1 - SABRES GOAL. The icing on the cake for Buffalo as Sam Reinhart scored on the empty net. Who else but Ryan O'Reilly makes the play in his own zone. 5-3 BUF.
