Team USA advances to the quarterfinals with a win over Germany

Sabres forward Jack Eichel scored a late power play goal in the win

(WGR 550) - Team USA clinched a quarterfinals birth at the World Championship on Sunday thanks to a 3-1 win over Germany. The game was 1-1 midway through the third period, but goals by Sabres forward Jack Eichel and Dylan Larkin Det. clinched the win.

Eichel had another strong game, getting stopped on many good chances. He was also good defensively, playing on a line with Chris Kreider N.Y.R. and Jack Hughes. Hughes is the favorite to be taken first overall by New Jersey in next month’s NHL Draft. Hughes moved to Eichel’s wing thanks to an injury to Johnny Gaudreau Calg..

Eichel is tied for 10th in tournament scoring with two goals and six assists for eight points in six games. After the game, Team USA coach Jeff Blashill Det. said, “I thought Jack Eichel really raised his game and played like he wasn’t going to be denied."

Team USA’s leading scorer is Pat Kane Chi.. He has two goals and eight assists, and sent a cross-ice pass to Eichel on the power play to make it a two goal lead over the Germans.

The other United States goal was tipped in by James van Riemsdyk Phil.

Cory Schneider N.J. got the win in goal, making 24 saves.

Team USA is second in Group A with 14 points. Canada has 12 points, but has played one less game than the U.S. and Germany. The Germans have lost two straight, but also have 12 points. Finland leads with 16 points.

Team Canada plays Denmark on Monday and then faces the United States on Tuesday.
