Team USA just got by Latvia at the World Championship

Cam Atkinson gets another game-winning goal for the U.S.

(WGR 550) - It wasn’t easy, but Team USA stayed undefeated at the IIHF World Championship on Thursday beating Latvia 3-2 in overtime.

The United States got a late third period power play, but couldn’t score, but it did score when it got a 4-on-3 PP in overtime.

Johnny Gaudreau (CALG) sent a pass off the crease to Cam Atkinson in his skates, but the Blue Jackets winger kicked to puck to his stick and tapped home the winner. Atkinson got the game-winning goal over Canada in the shootout. He now has three goals and five points in four games.

The U.S. trailed 2-1 late in the second period, but Colin White (OTT) beat Elvis Merzlikins through the pads to tie the game.

Team USA took the early lead when Chris Kreider (NYR) knocked home a puck lying behind Merzlikins just after a 5-on-3 power play had expired.

Two Blackhawks wingers, Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat both had two assists in the game. Kane leads Team USA in scoring with a goal and seven points in four games.

Keith Kinkaid (NJ) made 17 saves for the win. He’s played all four games for Team USA.

The U.S. has 10 points in Group B and is in first place, one point in front of Team Finland.

Latvia is in fourth place in Group B with six points.

The U.S. plays Korea on Friday.
