The University at Buffalo women’s basketball team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament Friday afternoon. The 10-seed Bulls defeated the even-seed Rutgers 82-71, pulling off a first-round upset for the second consecutive year.

UB led by six after the first 10 minutes of play, but trailed by two at halftime and at the end of the third quarter.

With the score tied 69-69 and less than five minutes remaining in the game, Summer Hemphill put the Bulls ahead 72-69 after completing an old-fashioned three-point play with a made free throw. Hemphill scored on the next possession to put the Bulls up 74-69 and they would pull away from there, out-scoring the Scarlett Knights 8-2 over the final four minutes. UB out-scored Rutgers 23-10 in the fourth quarter.

Hemphill led all UB scorers with 23 points, while Cierra Dillard put up a stat line of 20 points, six assists, four rebounds and four blocks. Hannah Hall and Autumn Jones also finished with 12 points apiece.

The Bulls will look to advance to the Sweet 16 for a second consecutive year on Sunday. However, UB will be facing their toughest opponent all season, the two-seed Connecticut Huskies. The most storied team in women's college basketball history will be playing in front of a home crowd as well, stacking the deck even higher against the Bulls.

Sunday’s game against the Huskies is scheduled to tip-off at 7:10 p.m.
